Does God Approve of Abortion

Does God Approve of Abortion?

“I asked God to stop me if abortion was wrong. When He didn’t, I felt it was okay. Why didn’t He stop me, Sydna?” the post-abortive woman asked.

Many faith-based hearts prayed before they aborted, asking for God to intervene if this wasn’t His will for them. These ambiguous prayers are often answered, just not in the way we expect.

Most never understand that if God created their unborn child, then He knew all the days of their life on Earth. He would never make a child without a purpose in mind. His divine will is never to see His creations destroyed through abortion.

This woman remembered struggling to find a parking spot near the abortion clinic. She initially thought God was trying to stop her. Then someone pulled out of their spot. “I felt that was God’s signal that abortion was okay. Afterwards, I realized just how wrong I had been,” she concluded.

Another woman shared she had prayed for a sign from God. Within a few minutes, she noticed a big billboard that read, “Abortion Stops a Beating Heart.” While God had been very clear in answering her prayer, she didn’t recognize the billboard as His answer and aborted the next day.

While the actual word “abortion” does not appear in the Bible, Jesus spoke about his love for children in Matthew 19:13-14 – Then people brought little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples rebuked them. Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

“I searched online after my positive pregnancy test,” a teenager told me. “I found information where it said God would forgive me if I aborted. Within an hour of leaving that clinic, I felt God’s love but hated myself.”

Again, God doesn’t create children to be aborted. Why would He do such a thing? Children are a gift from Him to bless us. If that gift is rejected, He welcomes that child home into His care. Sadly, the parents are often left in turmoil that could shadow their entire future. But that was not God’s plan for His perfect creation.

When I left a Planned Parenthood clinic after learning I was pregnant, I also prayed for God’s clear direction. I was so steeped in sin by that point, I could not discern any answer. Opening a Bible and searching God’s word for answers never even occurred to me.

Here are some answers I would have found in the Bible to my question to God:

  • Isaiah 49:1-3– The LORD called me from the womb. From the innermost parts of my mother, God named me….
  • Jeremiah 1:5– Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart
  • Psalm 139:13-16– For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.
  • Isaiah 49:15– Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you!
  • Deuteronomy 30:19– I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live.

If a woman is a Christian when she approaches the abortion clinic, she often feels deeply conflicted. Many describe feeling like they had an angel talking into one ear and a devil in the other. The angelic and demonic messages are starkly different, which only increases anxiety levels.

Arguments pushing a woman to abort often sound very logical. Having a baby seems impossible without support. Family and friends often offer wishy washy messages like, “I’ll support whatever choice you want to make.”

Those statements don’t offer support. They feel a great deal like abandonment.

Part of me felt the urge to flee that abortion clinic but my boyfriend told me that if I came out of the clinic still pregnant, he’d leave me in the streets of that city. I believe I heard God tell me to run around the corner and down the block – that someone would be there waiting to help me.

Had I followed that spiritual intuition, I believe God would have supernaturally placed someone there to assist me. In many cities, that assistance is discovered through pregnancy center ministries.

The other side of my heart heard the “abortion logic” my boyfriend had been repeating during the drive to the clinic. “Abortion is the mature decision that would spare our families any humiliation. It is a safe and legal choice for teenagers in your position and a good choice,” he emphasized.

In that moment of overwhelming confusion, stress, anxiety and uncertainty, it was difficult to know what God thought about abortion. I had never heard anyone speak against this horror. Yet my heart belonged to the Creator of the Universe. I knew God loved children.

Playing these type of “sign” games with God can be confusing upon discovering an unexpected pregnancy. Few understand that God has already outlined His perspective on taking life in the Bible.

Anger towards God for not physically stopping us from aborting is also common. It is a human tendency to hold God accountable for the decisions we make. While the Holy Spirit can be working to get our attention, we simply don’t recognize His Divine voice in our hearts.

God gave us the gift of a free will. By Our Creator’s very nature, He does not demand we do things His way, even though it is the best way. God lets us make our own choices. Thankfully, He also wants to heal our hearts from all our sins.

In the abortion recovery process, the main goal is to help women understand God’s word and learn to recognize the Holy Spirit’s direction internally. When we learn to recognize His message in our hearts, God can comfort for the rest of our lives.

Beginning to heal can be as easy as a humble prayer, asking for God’s help in understanding your pain. Reading the Bible daily can help anyone hear God’s voice in a deeper way.
